Gerrards Cross, U.K. : Colin Smythe Ltd., 1975. 272 pp.
Includes index & bibliographical references
First published in 1975, this classic treatise, written by Walter Uphoff and Mary Jo Uphoff, is an outstanding introduction to 20th century psychic research. The book has an excellent bibliography and is extensively documented, so interested readers will find a wealth of reference materials for further investigation. The book flows easily, effortlessly transporting the reader through the various topics discussed. Beginning with a request to remain open-minded and reasonable, yet skeptical, the authors explore the full range of psychic phenomena (See topic list below for details). They further consider implications for religion and science and discuss how to conduct and teach psychic research. Many wonderful photographs and illustrations are included. Although Professor Uphoff was best known academically for his work in labor studies, he and his wife truly enjoyed researching and writing about psychic phenomena, as is readily discernible from this work. Interested readers should include this fine addition to their psychic studies library.
The book’s topics include: telepathy (including extra sensory perception, or ESP), clairaudience, clairvoyance, psychometry, mediumship, guides, trance, cross-correspondence, direct voice, precognition, chair tests, apparitions, ghosts, hauntings, poltergeists, psychokinesis (i.e., telekinesis), materializations, psychic photography, skotography, recorded voices, apports, astral projection, out-of-body experiences, reincarnation, possession, psychic and spiritual healing, automatic writing and artwork, and “far out” (as the authors label it) areas such as astrology, dowsing, the heironymus machine, radiesthesia and radionics, UFOs, witchcraft, and paranormal music.
