What could be more fun than talking like a pirate? This Wednesday (September 19, 2012), you have my permission. Well, actually, you have permission from whoever created International “Talk Like a Pirate” Day. It’s the real deal. You can look it up.

How do you talk like a pirate? This website tells you. But it’s much easier (and much more fun) to watch our latest episode of MEG-A-RAE.

We’ve blogged about “Talk Like a Pirate” Day before. For moi, the celebration wouldn’t be complete without a quick look at our book trailer for my favorite pirate novel.

You should dress-up like a pirate, like Sammy the Toucan did in the video, to get in the proper mood. Talking like a pirate may look easy, but it takes lots of practice to get it exactly right. Try it out at work or at home this Wednesday. Strange looks mean that you’re doing it perfectly.

Miss Michelle’s First Early Literacy Vlog

Miss Michelle has created her first early literacy vlog! As usual, Sammy the Toucan played “sidekick.” As a video veteran, Sammy made sure everything ran smoothly, or at least as smoothly as could reasonably be expected with Sammy’s exuberant screen persona.

Great job, Miss Michelle! You’ll be an ol’ pro like Sammy in no time.

THE Classic Gothic Horror Tale

Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus when she was 18 years old. It was first published anonymously in 1818 (when she was 21) and has been in print ever since. It is THE classic Gothic horror tale and has been characterized as the first true science fiction novel, since it involves the use of scientific experiment.

Our book trailer summarizes the plot.

Shelley was deliberately vague about Victor Frankenstein’s procedures in reanimating his creation–although she was versed in Galvanism and the current (no pun intended) scientific investigations regarding the human body’s function–presumably because she did not wish to outrage early 19th century readers with grisly details. Shelley was probably more intrigued by the moral and philosophical issues than the precise scientific concepts involved. Still, the novel remains the best early example of science fiction and provided generations of contemporary and future authors of horror stories with a solid template for generating a truly terrifying tale.

MPL Has a New Video Champ

Wild Thang, former MPL early literacy specialist but still willing to sub for absent Library staff when she can fit it into her new work schedule, made the “Animal Alphabet Song” video for her early literacy blog. Within the next few days, hers will become the most viewed video on the MPL YouTube Channel.

Which video did “Animal Alphabet Song” leave eating its dust? Well, as it happens, our most popular book trailer.

Both videos should clear 32,000 viewings next week. But it is clear that Wild Thang’s will be our new most popular video. It currently is watched over 8,000 times a month. For us, that’s staggering.

Congratulations, Wild Thang. Too bad you’re not still working here full-time. We could really use your creativity. Now we’re stuck with Scowl-Face for video ideas. You can imagine how that’s working out. Fortunately, Savvy and Programma Mama are working now on video blogging, so we’re looking forward to their continuing development.
