If you need to complete service hours for an organization or simply want to help, consider volunteering at the library.

You can volunteer during the school year between the hours of 3 PM – 8 PM on Monday – Thursday, 3 PM – 5 PM on Friday, and 9 AM – 4 PM on Saturday.

Volunteer sessions are 1 hour long. You cannot volunteer more than 3 hours a week. Library staff need at least 48hrs notice before you volunteer. If you want to volunteer on a Monday, please submit your form no later than the Thursday prior.

We cannot accept teens who need to complete court-ordered service.

Virtual Volunteers

Mooresville Public Library is here to help teens achieve their volunteer goals.  Ms. Megan has compiled a list of opportunities for virtual volunteering. Choose one or more of the tasks to complete. You can repeat them! Be sure to complete the MPL Teen Virtual Volunteer Form to get credit for your effort!

MAIL-IN PROJECTS: 

Completed projects can be dropped in the library’s book drop or brought in to the YAZ. Make sure projects are secure in a bag and include your name, email address, and phone number. 
 

BIRTHDAY CARDS 
Create birthday cards for kids in foster care. Instructions for making cards are here. Cards should be handmade and not store bought. Please use cardstock or construction paper and not regular paper. Cards do not need to be in envelopes. Completed cards can be dropped in the library’s book drop — make sure they are secure in a bag and include your name, email address, and phone number or brought in to the YAZ and we will mail them to Braid Mission charity. Can be done multiple times; 1 service hour for 4 completed cards. 

CARDS FOR HOSPITALIZED KIDS 
Create fun, uplifting cards for kids in hospitals. Instructions for making cards are here. Cards should be handmade and not store bought. Please use cardstock or construction paper and not regular paper. Cards do not need to be in envelopes. Completed cards can be dropped in the library’s book drop — make sure they are secure in a bag and include your name, email address, and phone number — or brought into the YAZ and we will mail them to Cards for Hospitalized Kids charity. Can be done multiple times; 1 service hour for 4 completed cards. 

ENCHANTED MAKEOVERS PATCHES 
Create colorful patches for kids. Information for making patches is here. Scroll down the page until you see the patches section. Completed patches can be dropped in the library’s book drop — make sure they are secure in a bag and include your name, email address, and phone number — or brought into the YAZ and we will mail them to Enchanted Makeovers charity. Can be done multiple times; 1 service hour for 2 completed patches. 

MORE LOVE LETTERS 
Write a letter to someone who needs some joy in their life. Card requests are here. Note the deadlines listed on each letter request and make sure to drop your letters off at the library at least 5 days before the deadline. Completed letters can be dropped in the library’s book drop — make sure they are secure in a bag and include your name, email address, and phone number — or brought into the YAZ and we will mail them to the recipients on behalf of More Love Letters charity. Can be done multiple times; 1 service hour for 2 completed letters. 

ONE PAGE ZINE 
Make a zine out of one page of paper. To see an example, click here. Instructions on making one-page zines are here. There are three choices of topics: 1) a “how to” guide with tips on how to do something — examples are how to be TikTok famous, how to level up in a video game, how to make a DIY scrunchie — it can be anything you want! 2) reviews of books, movies, or TV shows 3) a fun, detailed list of your favorite things. For illustrations, you can choose to draw them or paste things you’ve printed from the internet or cut from magazines. Don’t forget to give your zine a title! You can write your first name or initials on it, but please don’t include your last name (or you can choose to leave your name off completely). Completed zines can be dropped in the library’s book drop — make sure they are secure in a bag and include your name, email address, and phone number — or brought into the YAZ. Copies of the zines will be given out for free to other teens at a later date. Can be done multiple times; 1 service hour for 1 completed zine. 

WATERCOLOR POSITIVITY CARDS 
Make watercolor cards with encouraging messages for others. To see examples, click here. Instructions on making cards: 1) cut watercolor paper into small cards 2) use a brush and watercolor paint to paint a colorful background on your card 2) once dry, use a permanent marker (such as a Sharpie) to write a positive message. For sample messages, click here. Completed cards can be dropped in the library’s book drop — make sure they are secure in a bag and include your name, email address, and phone number — or brought into the YAZ. Cards will be given to library patrons at a later date. Can be done multiple times; 1 service hour for 4 completed cards. 

VIRTUAL PROJECTS – all projects will be shared on the YAZ Instagram page (@yazmpl) 

Create a mini-review for the YAZ’s social media. 
Write, draw, sing, etc a mini-review that will be posted to the YAZ’s social media. The review should include title and author and one or two things you liked or didn’t like about the book. Can be done multiple times, 30 minutes of service for each mini-review. 

Create a “bookface” image for the YAZ’s social media. 
A bookface image is a photo of you holding a book with a face on the cover as if it was your own face. Search #bookface on Instagram for examples. Can be done multiple times, 30 minutes of service for each bookface. 

Recreate the cover of a famous or favorite book for the YAZ’s social media. 
You can be as creative as you’d like for this photo. Use supplies you have on hand to recreate a book cover. Be sure to include the title and author on your submission. Can be done multiple times, 30 minutes of service for each cover. 

Create a book spine poem and snap a picture of it. 
A book spine poem uses multiple books to write a short poem using the titles written on the spine. Can be done multiple times, 30 minutes of service for each poem. 

Create a 20-question fandom trivia quiz. 
Use your favorite trivia platform (ex. Kahoot!) to create a 20-question fandom trivia quiz. Include the link with your submission. Can be done multiple times, 1 service hour for each quiz. 

Create 1-2 paragraph book recommendation/review. 
Write a review or recommendation of a book you’ve read. It should be no longer than 2 paragraphs. Be sure to include the title and author in your submission. Can be done multiple times, 1 service hour for each recommendation/review. 

Curate a themed book list with graphics to post on the YAZ’s social media. 
Decide on a theme (ex. magic, Latinx MCs, journeys), then curate a list of titles that fit. Include graphics (be mindful of copyright!) with your submission. Can be done multiple times, 1 service hour for each list. 

Curate YA (Young Adult) suggested reading lists. 
Similar to the themed book list, but all titles must be YA. You do not have to include graphics. Can be done multiple times, 1 service hour for each list. 

Record a YA Book or Graphic Novel Recommendation-keep it under five minutes. 
You can use Flipgrid (https://flipgrid.com/3a8e56aa), Instagram, or a stand-alone recording option. Be sure to provide links to videos if you are unable to upload to the volunteer form. Can be done multiple times, 1 service hour for each recorded recommendation. 

Record a How-to Video. 
Record a how-to video on a topic of your choice. Upload to YouTube and submit the link in the volunteer form. Can be done multiple times, 2 service hours for each quiz.
